The Hindu newspaper reported that, Nirmala Sitharaman who landed the crucial defense portfolio in a major rejig of the Modi government today credited her elevation to a cabinet rank minister, to “cosmic grace,” and support from party leadership. Sitharaman is among the four junior ministers who were given a cabinet berth. “Somebody who has come from a small town, grown into the party with all the support of the leadership, and if given such responsibility, it just makes you feel sometimes that cosmic grace is there. Otherwise it is impossible,” she told reporters here after taking oath. “With the support of the prime minister, so many things have happened in the ministry like Start up India, Make in India etc. There is some misconception about ‘Make in India’, but it will be answered,” she said. Sitharaman was earlier Minister of State (Independent Charge) Commerce. The Hindu, September 3, 2017
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Monday that the daily revision of fuel prices had benefited consumers. He said the recent increase in prices was “mainly” driven by rising global prices. Mr. Pradhan, who has been elevated to the Cabinet rank and given additional charge of the Skill Development Ministry, said he would seek to meet the Prime Minister’s expectations from the Skill India Mission of creating “dignified job opportunity” for the youth. On fuel prices, he asked: “Should prices be hiked by 2.50 or 3 per litter in one go or they should be spaced out in small doses.” “Daily revision in prices is good. When we started daily revisions on June 16, rates dropped in the first fortnight,” he said, ruling out any change in the system. The Hindu, September 4, 2017
