The creation of a nation-wide political narrative seems to be one of the main attributes of the success of Modi and the NDA Government. Even a sensitive issue like demonetization, despite several policy loop holes, proved to be politically successful because the government and the Prime Minister in his clarion call to the nation succeeded in selling that narrative. Farmer’s agitations in several parts of the country are perceived to have broken that narrative. Though it may damage the BJP state governments in the short-run, however, localized in nature, these potential crises have been successfully ‘quarantined’ at the state level and the national narrative will continue to hold reign.
BJP President Amit Shah’s recent comment referring to Gandhi has evoked satire as well as derision. While Gandhi was commonly referred to as a ‘shrewd baniya’ by academics , Amit Shah’s comments were not taken in good state by the media and the Opposition parties. Moreover, much like BJP and the Sangh Parivar’s new love for Ambedkar , many BJP leaders have resorted to Gandhian methods and ideas( including the idea of Swacchta popularized by Modi and hunger strike undertaken by Shiv Raj Chouhan) , historically considered to be an anti-thesis for the ideology of Hindutva.
