In the recent months, there has been extensive discussion on the issue of land acquisition, crop damage and revival of Indian agriculture. “The State of Indian Farmers” study conducted by Lokniti in collaboration with Bharat Krishak Samaj has been widely quoted in many articles and Television debates during the last two months. The study is a unique resource for understanding the attitudes, opinions and perception of Indian farmers on a wide range of issues concerning them.
This study was spread over 18 major states with a randomly selected sample of 5480 farmers. In many farmer households, a youth member and a female member were also interviewed separately to document their opinion on issues specifically related to them. Fieldwork for the study was conducted in December 2013 – January 2014. The investigators visited 274 villages in 137 districts spread across the country.
The second edition of this study is currently being planned for Late 2015 or early 2016.
