Summer Workshop on Research Methodology: Analyzing Quantitative data on Indian Politics

Lokniti - Programme for Comparative Democracy, Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), Delhi, in collaboration with other Academic Institutes like The Indian Institute of Advance Study, Shimla and the Jain University, Bengaluru has been organizing an annual Summer Workshop on ‘Analyzing Quantitative Data on Indian Politics’.

Research training remains one of the weakest aspects of the learning for any student of Political Science in India. Hence we brought together a group of young political scientists to give them an opportunity to improve their skills in quantitative analysis. While we invite some of our mid-career colleagues to attend this summer school, we select the remaining candidates through a process of competitive selection from across the country for the limited seats that were available. In this Summer School there was a special emphasis on data analysis skills required for Political Science.

This year, the fourth Summer School is being organized by Lokniti-CSDS in collaboration with Jain University Bengaluru. Earlier Workshops were organized in association with IIAS, Shimla and University of Michigan. Some of the leading scholars working on empirical methods in Political Science have been involved in designing this summer school. In this Summer School there will be a special emphasis on making sense of quantitative data on Indian politics. The objective of this Summer Workshop is to bring together a group of political scientists with the aim of providing them an opportunity to improve their skills in quantitative analysis. The selected participants are given a set of readings before they come to attend the workshop and will be expected to attend lectures and practical data analysis sessions. Pradeep Chhibber (University of California at Berkeley) and Irfan Nooruddin (Ohio State University) will be the main resource persons for the workshop while other resource persons will include Ashutosh Varshney (Brown University), Sandeep Shastri (Jain University), Sanjay Kumar (CSDS) and Suhas Palshikar (University of Pune).

We invite the following categories of candidates to apply for this workshop (preference is given to young researchers):
Teachers of Political Science in colleges and Universities who are working on empirical subjects and would benefit from further training.
Research students of Political Science who are working on empirical themes for their M. Phil. or Ph. D. dissertations and can benefit from further training.
Any other person (including those from outside Political Science and outside academia) who are interested in making sense of politics by analyzing quantitative data.

This is a full time residential training course and candidates admitted to the workshop are expected to stay at the Institute and engage in full time work on all days during this period. All expenses regarding food and lodging is taken care of by the Institute.
