Summer Workshop on Research Methodology: Analyzing Quantitative data on Indian Politics
The Indian Institute of Advance Study, Shimla and Lokniti-A Programme for Comparative Democracy, CSDS, is organizing a two-week Summer Workshop on Research Methodology: Analyzing Quantitative data on Indian Politics to be held at Shimla from Monday, 16th June 2008 to 29th June 2008. We received a very wide response to our advertisement for the Second Summer Workshop in two of the esteemed journals The Economic and Political weekly and the Seminar. Finally we have twenty-four candidates selected for this years’ Summer School.
Research training remains one of the weakest aspects of the learning for any student of Political Science in India. Hence we plan to bring together a group of young political scientists to give them an opportunity to improve their skills in quantitative analysis. While we will invite some of our mid-career colleagues to attend this summer school, we will select through a process of competitive selection candidates from across the country for the limited seats that are available. In this Summer School there will be a special emphasis on data analysis skills required for Political Science. Each of the participants will be given a set of readings before they come and will be expected to attend lectures and practical data analysis sessions. This is the second Summer School and we hope it will become an annual feature in the coming years.
Some of the leading scholars working on empirical methods in Political Science have been involved in designing this summer school and will act as resource persons. These include Professor Arun Aggrawal (University of Michigan), Pradeep Chhibber (University of Berkeley), Peter deSouza (IIAS, Shimla), Irfan Nuruddin (University of Ohio), Yogendra Yadav (CSDS), Suhas Palshikar (University of Pune), Sandeep Shastri (IACT/Lokniti), T R Sharma (IIAS, Shimla). We are hoping to have many other scholars to join as resource persons.
We invited the following kinds of candidates below 35 years of age, to apply for this course:
| 1. |
Young and very promising teachers of Political Science in colleges and
universities who are working on empirical subjects and would benefit
from further training. |
| 2. |
Bright research students of Political Science who are working on
empirical themes for their M Phil or Ph D dissertations and can
benefit from further training. |
| 3. |
Any other preferably young person (including those from outside
Political Science and outside academia) who are exceptionally talented
and interested in making sense of politics.
|
As expected we received an overwhelming response from candidates across the country for selection for the limited seats available for this training, making the selection process tough and very competitive.
The Summer School is sponsored by the IIAS and all the costs will be borne by the Institute. This includes travel to and from place of residence, accommodation and food during the entire stay for the Summer School.
