Research Group on Educational Inequalities |

We are pleased to announce the creation of a new group comprised of researchers interested in the broad area of education inequalities in India. Various axes of social inequalities (caste, class, gender) are known to determine access to education, and unequal educational opportunities in turn reinforce social hierarchies. Education is one of the primary means for the inter-generational transfer of social inequalities, and an important facilitator of social mobility.
The newly enacted Right to Education Act (RTE) forms the context to the research agenda of this group. As such, the discussions are likely to focus on issues of access, retention, quality, attainment and financing of elementary/school education. We will also focus on issues of measuring and monitoring the success of the RTE and possible policies to strengthen it further. The Group aims to push for a more exhaustive critical discussion on the larger issues surrounding education inequality in India, by bringing together interested researchers, activists, grass-root organisations and policy makers.
As a preliminary agenda, the group aims to meet once a month to deliberate on a variety of issues and to organise talks by specialists on various aspects of education. The group currently includes Divya Vaid, Hilal Ahmed, Pankaj Pushkar, Sanjay Kumar, Sanjeer Alam, Sarada Balagopalan and Yogendra Yadav.

Talk by Dr. Rukmini Banerji on the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) Surveys |

The Research Group on Educational Inequalities at CSDS (facilitated by members of the Lokniti team) organized a talk and discussion on the 22nd of November with Dr. Rukmini Banerji, Director of the ASER Centre, on the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) Surveys. As one of the largest annual studies on elementary education and learning outcomes in rural India surveying approximately 700,000 children, ASER is a valuable data source for the monitoring of the status of education in the country.
Dr. Banerji discussed the evolution of the ASER surveys (which are facilitated by Pratham) with an emphasis on their unique methodology and their implementation through a citizen-led effort. The ASER surveys stress the importance of gathering information not only on access to education, but also on the ‘quality’ of education imparted in schools in rural India. This talk was attended by CSDS and Delhi University faculty, DU students and education researchers, and was followed by an animated and in-depth discussion with the ASER team on their findings and data related issues.
