Dr. Deshpande has been teaching courses on Indian Politics, Constitutional Process in India, Indian and Western Political Thought, Marxist Political Sociology, Class and on Women and Politics.

As a part of her research Dr Deshpande continued to work on political thinking in 19th and 20th century Maharashtra and has also taken up issues related to Maharashtra’s political process, regional political economy, rise of the urban centres and caste class situation and more specifically issues related to politics of the poor. She has completed research projects on politics of the urban informal sector workers, life and politics in slums and more recently on the role of caste associations in contemporary Indian politics.

Dr Deshpande has been associated with the Lokniti network since 1996 and worked on issues related to women’s vote using the NES series data. She was a part of the group of scholars from India who attempted a qualitative assessment of working of Indian democracy as a part of the SDSA project of the Lokniti and assessed the working of the state institutional domain in India. She participated in the two summer workshops on research methodology analyzing quantitative data in Indian politics jointly organized by the Lokniti and the IIAS, Shimla in 2007 and 2008.
