Priyavadan M. Patel is Professor of Political Science in the Department of political science at the M.S. University of Baroda. He has been Deputy Coordinator (Indian Government-Politics and Administration) for the UGC Special Assistance Programme, Third Phase, from 1998 to 2002. From 1986 to 1993 Prof. Patel was editor of the Gujarat Rajyashastra Mandal newsletter. He has been a member of the Working Sub-Group on: Tribal Development Planning, VIII Five Year Plan for the Government of Gujarat from 1987 to 1988 and worked on the Advisory Committee on Destitute and Delinquent Children in Baroda City organised by the Social Welfare Department, Government of Gujarat, (1986-87). He was a member of the Social Input Plan Implementation Committee to the District Planning Office, District Panchayat, Sabarkantha District from 1981-84.

Some of Prof. Patel's projects have included: "An Evaluative Study of Integrated Tribal Development Projects, Dahod, Panchmahal, Gujarat," sponsored by the Tribal Development Department, Government of Gujarat, October 1981 - June 1985; "Elite Politics and Manipulation of Masses: A Case of Baroda Riots," sponsored by the Centre for Social Studies, Surat, 1983-1986; "Mal-Adjustment and the Problem of Destitution and Delinquency in Baroda City", sponsored by UNICEF and Social Welfare Department, Government of Gujarat, January 1986 - September 1986 and "World Values Survey, 1991-2000", A Global Research Project of Institute of Social Research, University of Michigan, USA.

Prof. Patel has been associated with the CSDS since 1995 and has been Gujarat State Coordinator for National Election Studies in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004. He has also coordinated the "National Election Studies and Audit" in Gujarat in 1999 and the "Gujarat Legislative Assembly Election Study - 2002" for Lokniti.


Research Interests:
Prof. Patel's research interests include Indian Government & Politics, Public Administration (especially, Indian Democracy and Development: A State- Society Interface). He is presently Gujarat State Coordinator for a joint project between Ohio State University, University of California, Berkley and Bangalore University titled "State and Society".
