IGNOU ODL Assessment Study - 2008
The report of IGNOU Open & Distance Learning (ODL) Assessment Study written by Sanjay Kumar and Praveen Rai was submitted to IGNOU. The study was conducted by Lokniti in 7 states of Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Bihar, Assam, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh & Gujarat at 13 Satellite Interactive Terminals (SIT) spread across the country. The Study was primarily a user centric study to assess the efficacy and sustainability of IGNOU’s interactive multimedia learning support system through teleconferencing and web-based platforms utilizing Edusat and the Internet facilities. One of the key initiative of IGNOU’s interactive multimedia learning support exercise is regular teleconferencing sessions on various programmes at SIT centres. However it was felt in many quarters that the existing teleconferencing system is not being optimally utilized and the need of the hour is to make it more worthy and efficient. The study aimed at exploring and assessing the complete system of ODL with focus on teleconferencing sessions from its ends users and also from its various stakeholders. For a holistic assessment and Feed in of the entire ODL system, IGNOU slot in Doordarshan and IGNOU hour broadcast at Gyan Vani Radio stations for students learning was also reviewed and evaluated. |
The quantitative part of the study included a survey of 2856 face-to-face interviews out of which 2800 were students enrolled in EduSat programmes and 56 from staff associated with the EduSat at 13 SIT centers selected for the proposed study. The SIT centers were selected purposively in consultation with IGNOU personnel. The survey covered students enrolled in EduSat professional programmes (MBA, MCA, B.Sc. Nursing, etc), Bachelor’s degree courses (Science and Non-Science) and in Diploma/Certificate courses so as to get a representative ‘feed in’ of the entire system. The sampled study centers were purposively selected in consultation with IGNOU.
Sanjay Kumar of the CSDS directed the study. The fieldwork of the study was coordinated by Rakesh Ranjan (Bihar), Kinjal Sampat (Delhi), Mahasweta Jani (Gujarat), B.S. Padmavathi (Karnataka), Ram Shankar (Madhya Pradesh), and Sandhya Goswami (Assam). The team that designed, coordinated and analyzed the study at CSDS comprised of Pankaj Pushkar, Praveen Rai, Vikas Gautam, Himanshu Bhattacharya and Kanchan Malhotra. |
